About My Consultation

What happens in a consultation

Neurologists are consultant physicians who specialise in diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Patients can present with many different symptoms such as headaches, migraine, blackouts, seizure, dizzy spells, tingling, weakness, fatigue, memory loss and walking problems. The development of such symptoms can be very stressful and usually require neurological assessment. In a consultation symptoms are assessed by taking a careful history of the symptoms usually followed by examining the patient and then ordering investigations. Once a diagnosis is made the neurologist will supervise the appropriate treatment.

What tests might be arranged

Depending on your symptoms different tests may be organised. These include blood tests, an MRI scan of brain, spine or muscles or electrical recording of brain waves (EEG) or electrical recoding of nerves and muscles (EMG). Sometimes tests in hospital are required and this might include a lumbar puncture, a muscle biopsy or a nerve biopsy.
